The Winery
Two hours north-west of Sydney, the Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine growing region. Owned and operated by Ray and Kirsten Smith, the vineyard is managed under organic principles and was named after Ben, the original owner's kelpie dog.
The Winemaker
After completing a Chemical Engineering degree, Michael began his career working in food process engineering. Within this field he worked with many beverages from Milo, tea, coffee to tomato juice.
However his love of wine soon led him to thinking winemaking could be more fun. He then completed a Bachelor of Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, graduating with distinction in 2002.
Michael has become one of the most highly respected winemakers in the Hunter Valley.
